Advocating for law changes to protect kids’ educational rights
Ohio House Bill 111 would require schools to transfer a student’s educational records to their new school within five days of receiving a request.
This is important to our clients because today’s student populations are mobile and frequently change schools. The timely transfer of educational records ensures that these students receive appropriate educational services and provides consistency and continuity in their education during transitions in their lives. This is critical for students with disabilities, and mobile students generally.
Without the timely transfer of records, students with disabilities can go without services and supports that are vital to their success in school, sometimes for days or weeks. Teachers also struggle to serve ever-changing student populations without access to information about their history or needs when records don’t follow students to new schools.
ABLE Attorney Taylor Burns gave proponent testimony on House Bill 111 before the Ohio House of Representatives Primary and Secondary Education Committee in November.
